        Baduanjin

Reputed to have been brought to China in the 5th century A.D. from India, Baduanjin or the Eight Pieces of Brocade Qigong exercises were integral in developing the Yi Jin Jing, or "Muscle/Tendon Changing Classic."   Made up of a series of stretching routines with accompanied breathing, the Eight Pieces of Brocade (Baduan literally means "eight sections" and Jin, "brocade") is one of the oldest and most widely practiced exercises to ensure health and longevity.  Because of its effectiveness for keeping fit, Shaolin monks accept it as one of the basic entry-level exercises for Shaolin Wushu.

Baduanjin is an ideal exercise for most people; regular practice of this exercise can strengthen one's internal organs as well as one's muscles and tendons.  Stretching and opening of the body is coordinated with the breathing, the body movements are slow and the breathing is rhythmic and in harmony with the body movements.

To have any beneficial effect on one’s health, perseverance is necessary.  If, as a Chinese saying goes you "go fishing for three days and dry the net for two", you will never keep fit nor cure diseases.
